18 It is
good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. The man who fears God will
avoid all [extremes]. Ecclesiastes 7:18
(NIV)
9 How
long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little
slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- 11 and poverty will come on you
like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
Proverbs 6:9-11 (NIV)
28 Like a
city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. Proverbs 25:28 (NIV)
1 Be
imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just
as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and
sacrifice to God. 3 But
among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of
impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity,
foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
5 For of
this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an
idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Ephesians 5:1-5 (NIV)
15 Be
very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every
opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the
Lord's will is. 18 Do not
get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the
Spirit. Ephesians 5:15-18 (NIV)
20 Do not
join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, 21 for drunkards and gluttons
become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Proverbs 23:20-21 (NIV)
25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you
hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full
of greed and self-indulgence.”
Matthew 23:25 (NIV)
1 But
mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of
themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their
parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without
self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited,
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- 5 having a form of godliness but
denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NIV)

“The glutton
may enjoy his food, but he does not enjoy his condition.” Gary
Thomas
“He was the most
balanced and perhaps the most beloved being ever to enter the society of
men. Though born amid most disgusting
surroundings, the member of a modest working family, He bore Himself always
with great dignity and assurance. Though
He enjoyed no special
advantages as a child, either in
education or employment, His entire philosophy and outlook on life were the
highest standards of human conduct ever set before mankind. Though He had no vast economic assets,
political power or military might, no other person ever made such an enormous
impact on the world’s history. Because
of Him……..people have come into a life of decency and honor and noble
conduct………He came to set men free from their own sins, their own selves, their
own fears. Those so liberated loved Him
with fierce loyalty. It is this One who
insists that He was the Good Shepherd, the understanding Shepherd, the
concerned Shepherd who cares enough to seek out and save and restore lost men
and women.” Phillip Keller
“Scripture permits us to broaden the definition of idolatry so that it includes anything on which we set our affections and indulge as an excessive and sinful attachment. Therefore, the idols that we can see are certainly not the whole problem. Idolatry includes anything we worship: the lust for pleasure, respect, love, power, control, or freedom from pain. Furthermore, the problem is not outside of us….the problem is in us….the heart’s instinctive plotting in this idol construction is amazing. We know we are called to imitate God. This means we are to live for His glory, not our own. We are to make Him famous, not ourselves….the purpose of all idolatry is to manipulate the idol for our own benefit…..but (we) need the power of God, the message of Christ crucified and risen. Other therapies can offer sobriety, but only this good news is powerful enough to liberate the soul.” Ed Welch
“God will be our compensation for every ‘sacrifice’ we have made.” F. B. Meyer
HEART
SAVOR
- · As God’s child I am to avoid all extremes. I am to keep my life in balance for my good and His glory.
- · Self-control is the wall around the “city” of my life. I am to look for and correct breaches in this wall through the power of the Spirit. The quicker I handle them the better it is for me. Satan looks for breaches as well. Ancient cities were only as strong as the walls around them as the enemy would always hit at their weakest point.
- · I am to be careful how I live my life submitting my will to the control and power of the Holy Spirit. This is a blessing for me.
