FAITH
WILL DEMONSTRATE
BREAD
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have
faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and
daily food. 16 If
one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does
nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not
accompanied by action, is dead. 18 But
someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith
without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and
shudder. James 2:14-19 (NIV)
26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith
without deeds is dead. James 2:26 (NIV)
3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his
commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what
he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But
if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how
we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6 (NIV)
43 “No good tree bears bad
fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree
is recognized by its own fruit. People
do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 The good man brings good
things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil
things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his
heart his mouth speaks. 46 Why do you call me, ‘Lord,
Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 I will show you what he is
like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. 48 He is like a man building
a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came,
the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well
built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them
into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a
foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction
was complete.” Luke 6:43-49 (NIV)
1 Now
faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 2 This
is what the ancients were commended for. Hebrews 11:1-2 (NIV)
32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell
about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, 33 who
through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was
promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched
the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was
turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign
armies. 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.
Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a
better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were
chained and put in prison. 37 They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were
put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,
destitute, persecuted and mistreated-- 38 the
world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in
caves and holes in the ground. 39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of
them received what had been promised. 40 God
had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be
made perfect. Hebrews 11:32-40 (NIV)
1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm
yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body
is done with sin. 2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly
life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For
you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living
in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They
think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation,
and they heap abuse on you. 1 Peter
4:1-4 (NIV)
5 If
we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be
united with him in his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him
so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be
slaves to sin-- 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Romans 6:5-7 (NIV)
14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it
under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone
in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before
men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
(NIV)
BUTTER
“Faith and works are bound up in the
same bundle. He that obeys God trusts
God; and he that trusts God obeys God.
He that is without faith is without works; and he that is without works
is without faith.” C. H. Spurgeon
“Our Lord does not care so much for the
importance of our works as for the love with which they are done.” Teresa
of Avila
“The
same thought appears again in Philippians 2:12, where Paul writes, ‘Work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling.’ Notice that the verse does not say
to work for salvation, but to work out salvation. As believers we work out the salvation we
possess; that is, we manifest it, we prove it to others. We do all that with the attitude that we do
not want to fail our Lord.” J. D. Watson
“Faith
is the root of works. A root that
produces nothing is dead.” Thomas Wilson
“Almighty God, give us grace that we may
cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light.” Book of Common Prayer
“Let us note how far from satisfactory is the
state of those who are content with sound doctrinal opinions, and orthodox
correct views of the Gospel, while in their daily life they give way to ill-temper,
ill-nature, malice, envy, quarrelling, squabbling, bickering, surliness,
passion, snappish language, and crossness of word and manner. Such persons, whether they know it or not,
are daily proclaiming that they are not Christ’s disciples. It is nonsense to talk about justification,
and regeneration, and election, and conversion, and the uselessness of works,
unless people can see in us practical Christian love.” John Charles Ryle
“What
ultimately keeps our motives biblically prioritized and holy before God is the
profound conviction that obeying God will merit us nothing. This is why Jesus tells us that, when we have
done all that we should do, we are still unprofitable servants. Jesus does not nullify the value of duty in
order to dissuade us from serving God, but to keep is from depending on duty to
gain God’s acceptance. When we
understand that our works in themselves earn us no merit with God, then the
only reason to do those works is love for Him.
Thus we learn to serve God not for personal gain but for His glory-not
for love of self but for love of the Savior.”
Bryan Chapell
“We
do the works, but God works in us the doing of the works.” Augustine
HEART
SAVOR
- ·
Our works will demonstrate to “Whom” or “whom” we
belong. Do those in our spheres know we
are Christians by our loving actions?
- ·
Works don’t save, they prove.
- ·
Our actions show what we believe to be true. Our works will demonstrate our love for Him
and our trust in Him.
