THE
WAY OF WISDOM
BREAD
13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains
understanding, 14 for she is
more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing
you desire can compare with her. 16 Long
life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all
her paths are peace.
Proverbs 3:13-17 (NIV)
5 “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words
or swerve from them. 6 Do not
forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over
you. 7 Wisdom is supreme;
therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. 8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace
her, and she will honor you. 9 She
will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of
splendor.” Proverbs 4:5-9 (NIV)
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD-- Isaiah 11:1-2 (NIV)
12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the
world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. Jeremiah 10:12
(NIV)
2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in
heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete
understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of
wisdom and knowledge. 4 I tell
you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. Colossians 2:2-4 (NIV)
18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those
who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the
wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20 Where
is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age?
Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For
since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God
was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who
believe. 22 Jews demand
miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but
we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to
Gentiles, 24 but to those whom
God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of
God. 25 For the foolishness of God
is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's
strength. 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 (NIV)
19 “But wisdom is proved
right by her actions.” Matthew 11:19 (NIV)
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God,
who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
6 But when he asks, he must
believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown
and tossed by the wind. 7 That
man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in
all he does. James 1:5-8 (NIV)
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of
God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or
who has been his counselor?” 35 “Who
has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To
him be the glory forever! Amen.
Romans 11:33-36 (NIV)

“We
judge things by their present appearance; but the Lord sees them in their
consequences. If we could do the same we
would be perfectly of His mind; but since we can’t, it is an unspeakable mercy
that He will manage for us, whether we are pleased with His management or not;
and it is regarded as one of His heaviest judgments when He gives any person up
to the way of their own hearts, and to walk according to their own wisdom.” John
Newton
“God alone knows
the depth and riches of His Godhead, and divine wisdom alone can declare His
secrets.” Thomas Aquinas
“Dost thou want more wisdom
than exists in the Father, more love than displays itself in the Son, or more
power than is manifest in the influences of the Spirit? Bring hither thine empty pitcher! Surely this well will fill it. Haste, gather up thy wants, and bring them
there – thine emptiness, thy woes, thy needs.
Behold, this river of God is full for thy supply; what canst thou desire
beside? Go forth, my soul, in this thy
might. The Eternal God is thine helper!” C. H.
Spurgeon
