OUR
VERY GREAT REWARD
BREAD
1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a
vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am
your shield, your very great reward.” Genesis
15:1 (NIV)
16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he
drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes,
who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the
LORD was my support. 19 He
brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
20 The LORD has dealt with me according to my
righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. 21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not done
evil by turning from my God. 22 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away
from his decrees. 23 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself
from sin. 24 The LORD has rewarded me according to my
righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. Psalms 18:16-24 (NIV)
23 If the LORD delights in a man’s way, he makes his
steps firm; 24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD
upholds him with his hand. 25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen
the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their
children will be blessed. Psalms 37:23-26 (NIV)
10 Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they
will enjoy the fruit of their deeds. Isaiah 3:10 (NIV)
33 Oh,
the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How
unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 “Who
has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Who
has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” 36 For
from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory
forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36 (NIV)
12 “Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and
the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight.” 2 Samuel 10:12 (NIV)
16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers. 17 Every
good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the
heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:16-17 (NIV)
6 And without faith it is impossible to please God,
because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
BUTTER
“This
morning let us hear the Lord Jesus speak to each one of us: ‘I will help
thee’. ‘It is but a small thing for Me,
thy God, to help thee. Consider what I
have done already. What! Not help thee? Why, I bought thee with My blood. What!
Not help thee? I have died for
thee; and if I have done the greater, will I not do the less? Help thee!
It is the least thing I will ever do for thee; I have done more, and
will do more. Before the world began I
chose thee. I made the covenant for
thee. I laid aside My glory and became a
man for thee; I gave My life for thee; and if I did all this, I will surely
help thee now. In helping thee, I am
giving thee what I have bought for thee already. If thou hadst need of a thousand times as
much help, I would give it thee; thou requirest little compared with what I am
ready to give. ‘Tis much for thee to
need, but it is nothing for me to bestow.
“Help thee?” Fear not! If there were an ant at the door of thy
granary asking for help, it would not ruin thee to give him a handful of thy
wheat; and thou art nothing but a tiny insect at the door of my all
sufficiency. “I will help thee”.’ O my soul, is not this enough? Dost thou need more strength than the
omnipotence of the United Trinity? Dost
thou want more wisdom than exists in the Father, more love than displays itself
in the Son, or more power than is manifest in the influences of the
Spirit? Bring hither thine empty
pitcher! Surely this well will fill
it. Haste, gather up thy wants, and
bring them there – thine emptiness, thy woes, thy needs. Behold, this river of God is full for thy
supply; what canst thou desire beside?
Go forth, my soul, in this thy might.
The Eternal God is thine helper!”
C. H. Spurgeon
“In Him are fullness of joy and
pleasures for evermore. Only He can
satisfy; He is my all-sufficient portion.
He is my sun and shield, root and branch, foundation and corner stone,
and my sword and shield. He only can
answer all my desires and necessities.
He is my God, my portion, and my all.”
Thomas Lye
“There is in Him an all-sufficiency of grace and strength; all our
springs are in Him, and all our streams are from Him.” Matthew Henry
“Be not discouraged, weak
Christians, if you meet with hardship from the world, and find reproaches for
your services; the Lord will reward you.
He will not despise the day of small things.” Thomas Brooks
“Do you seek any
further reward beyond that of having pleased God? In truth, you know not how great a good it is
to please Him.” John
Chrysostom
“Simply wait upon
Him. So doing, we shall be directed,
supplied, protected, corrected, and rewarded.” Vance Havner
“The least good
that is done by the weakest saint will be highly regarded and rewarded.” Thomas
Brooks
