GOD
OF COMPASSION
BREAD
1 When all these blessings and curses I have set before you
come upon you and you take them to heart wherever the LORD your God disperses you among the nations, 2 and when you and your children return to the
LORD your God and obey him with
all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you
today, 3 then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes
and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he
scattered you. Deuteronomy 30:1-3 (NIV)
23 But the LORD
was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of
his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling
to destroy them or banish them from his presence. 2 Kings 13:23
(NIV)
8 Do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were; submit to the LORD. Come to the sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that his fierce anger will turn away from you. 9 If you return to the LORD, then your brothers and your children will be shown compassion by their captors and will come back to this land, for the LORD your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him. 2 Chronicles 30:8-9 (NIV)
1 Have
mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great
compassion blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1 (NIV)
3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness
endures forever. 4 He has caused
his wonders to be remembered; the LORD
is gracious and compassionate. Psalm
111:3-4 (NIV)
22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. Lamentations 3:22-26 (NIV)

17 They refused to listen and failed to remember
the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their
rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a
forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.
Therefore you did not desert them. Nehemiah
9:17 (NIV)
18 Yet
the LORD longs to be gracious to
you; he rises to show you compassion. For
the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed
are all who wait for him! Isaiah 30:18 (NIV)
8 This
is what the LORD says: “In the time
of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I
will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the
land and to reassign its desolate inheritances, 9 to
say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’ They will
feed beside the roads and find pasture on every barren hill. 10 They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor
will the desert heat or the sun beat upon them. He who has compassion on them
will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.” Isaiah
49:8-10 (NIV)
32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do
for you?” he asked.
33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” 34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him. Matthew 20:32-34 (NIV)

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so
that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have
received from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)
12 Therefore,
as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever
grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on
love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)

“Though our Savior’s passion is over, His compassion is not.” William Penn
“The Christian’s compassion must be like God’s –
unceasing.” William Barclay
“It is His love for man, His compassion for the human race,
that prompts God to hate sin with such a vengeance. He gave Heaven’s finest that we might have
the best; and He loathes with a holy abhorrence anything that would hinder our
being reconciled to Him.”
Billy Graham “By compassion we make others’ misery our own, and so, by relieving them, we relieve ourselves also.” Sir Thomas Browne
“I love Him because He first loved me. His goodness and mercy and compassion to me are new every day. And my assurance is lodged in these aspects of His character. My trust is in His love for me as His own. My serenity has as its basis an implicit, unshakable reliance on His ability to do the right thing, the best thing in any given situation. This to me is the supreme portrait of my Shepherd. Continually there flows out to me His goodness and His mercy, which even though I do not deserve them, come unremittingly from their source of supply – His own great heart of love.” Phillip Keller
“Jesus,
the Blessed One, is gentle. Even though he speaks with great fervor and biting
criticism against all forms of hypocrisy and is not afraid to attack deception,
vanity, manipulation and oppression, his heart is a gentle heart. He won't
break the crushed reed or snuff the faltering wick (see Matthew 12:20). He
responds to people's suffering, heals their wounds, and offers courage to the
fainthearted. Jesus came to bring good news to the poor, sight to the blind,
and freedom to prisoners (see Luke 4:18-19) in all he says, and thus he reveals
God's immense compassion. As his followers, we are called to that same
gentleness.” Henri Nouwen
