OVERFLOWING
THANKFULNESS
BREAD
46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.” Luke 1:46-55 (NIV)

18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, O
Sovereign LORD, and what is my
family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And
as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of
your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD? 20 What
more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign LORD. 21 For
the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great
thing and made it known to your servant. 22 How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and
there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 23 And who is like your people Israel--the one
nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to
make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving
out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from
Egypt? 2 Samuel 7:18-23 (NIV)
13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”
With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who
raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present
us with you in his presence. 15 All
this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more
people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though
outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles
are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is
seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is
eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:13-18 (NIV)
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food
will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest
of your righteousness. 11 You will
be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and
through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not only
supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions
of thanks to God. 13 Because of the
service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience
that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your
generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 2 Corinthians
9:10-13 (NIV)
6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue
to live in him, 7 rooted and built
up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with
thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV)
16 Be
joyful always; 17 pray
continually; 18 give thanks in
all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1
Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
15 Let
the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were
called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let
the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another
with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And
whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians
3:15-17 (NIV)
14 But
thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and
through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among
those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are the smell of death; to
the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task? 2
Corinthians 2:14-16 (NIV)

“Thanksgiving is
not merely a ‘nice’ Christian character trait. It is a sin-conquering force.
Gratitude is both a vital indicator of our soul’s health and a powerful
defender of our soul’s happiness. Which means we should intentionally cultivate
the healthy, happy habit of thanksgiving.”
Jon Bloom
“Deciding you’re deserving, can lead to your destroying. I have traced all kinds of scars of my own doing, and I have quietly wondered if: It’s not an overstatement to say that the root of all kinds of evil is entitlement. The choice for every heart is always, always, always this: Live feeling entitled to things — or live entrusting everything to God. God’s enthronement or my entitlement. Live feeling entitled to things — or live entrusting everything to God. Entitlement devastates, suffocates, incarcerates. Contentment liberates. Expectations are next to entitlement, and gratitude is next to godliness.” Ann Voskamp
“Pride always looks more powerful than humility on the outside. But in reality, it’s not. It’s not even close. Humility is stronger than pride like heaven is stronger than hell. Like the cross was stronger than the Roman Empire. Like the Resurrection and the Life was stronger than the grave. In the same way, thankfulness is stronger than lust, and serving is stronger than exploiting.” Jon Bloom
“Gratitude is not only a response to God in good times — it’s ultimately the very will of God in hard times. Gratitude isn’t only a celebration when good things happen. It’s a declaration that God is good no matter what happens.” Ann Voskamp
“Be thankful for the smallest
blessing, and you will deserve to receive greater. Value the least gifts no less than the
greatest and simple graces as especial favors.
If you remember the dignity of the Giver, no gift will seem small or
mean, for nothing can be valueless that is given by the Most High God.” Thomas A Kempis
