THIRSTY
BREAD
1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for
you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for
God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? Psalm 42:1-2 (NIV)
6 I spread out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a
parched land. Selah Psalm 143:6 (NIV)
1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul
thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is
no water. 2 I have seen you in
the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3 Because your love is better than life, my
lips will glorify you. 4 I
will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. 5 My soul will be satisfied as
with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. Psalm
63:1-5 (NIV)
8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I
have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my
soul. Psalm 143:8 (NIV)
11 The LORD will
guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will
strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring
whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:11 (NIV)
8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
Psalm 107:8-9 (NIV)
1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you
who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and
without cost. 2 Why spend money on
what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to
me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.” Isaiah
55:1-2 (NIV)
37 On
the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to
me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the
Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By
this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.
Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been
glorified. John 7:37-39 (NIV)
6 Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew
5:6 (NIV)
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from
me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” Revelation 21:6-7 (NIV)
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in
the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1 (NIV)

“When a believer
has fallen into a low, sad state of feeling, he often tries to lift himself out
of it by chastening himself with dark and doleful fears. Such is not the way to
rise from the dust, but to continue in it. It is not the law, but the gospel
which saves the seeking soul at first; and it is not a legal bondage, but
gospel liberty which can restore the fainting believer afterwards. Slavish fear
brings not back the backslider to God, but the sweet wooings of love allure him
to Jesus' bosom…Whatever good quality there is in divine grace, you shall enjoy
it to the full. All the riches of divine grace you shall receive in plenty; you
shall be as it were drenched with it: and as sometimes the meadows become
flooded by the bursting rivers, and the fields are turned into pools, so shall
you be--the thirsty land shall be springs of water.” Charles
Spurgeon
“Many of us are not thirsty for God because we
have quenched our thirst at other fountains.” Erwin

“When faith has
the upper hand in my heart I am satisfied with Christ and His promises. This is what Jesus meant when He said, ‘He
who believed in Me shall never thirst’ (John 6:35).
When my thirst for joy and meaning and
passion are satisfied by the presence and promises of Christ, the power of sin
is broken. We do not yield to the offer
of sandwich meat when we can smell steak sizzling on the grill. The fight of faith against lust is the fight
to stay satisfied with God.” John Piper
“If you are
thirsty in this life you have gone to the wrong well.” BHY
“God
is the only source of true happiness, because He offers those intangibles that
we mistakenly believe can be found on earth:
contentment, security, peace, and hope for the future. None of these can be found in a job, a human
relationship, money, power, or position.
They are God’s alone to give…The Lord Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount,
told where ultimate happiness lies:
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they
shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). This is
God’s promise – and it is true.
Riches…or righteousness? Which is
your goal?” Billy Graham
“I have always drunk of that water of life,
and have never been athirst in the sandy desert of this world.” Sundar Singh
“The world promises satisfaction through a
plethora of good things—relationships, careers, wealth, health, and more—so we
chase after these with reckless abandon. But these things are fleeting in this
life and ultimately cannot fulfill the craving of our soul for more. Only the
divine can satisfy. An intimate relationship with God is the only thing that
will satisfy every need we have. God is the one who transforms our hearts and
minds so that, even in dark days, we have unspeakable joy. He is the one who
quenches the thirst of our soul by showing us how much He loves us and cares
for us. He knows what You need, and He knows exactly how to meet you where you
are. If you are thirsty, remember that God is the source that quenches. He
wants you to drink from Him—the living water—and fulfill your heart’s desires.” Michael Youssef
