HUMILITY
BREAD
11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who
humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11 (NIV)
9 To
some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody
else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple
to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The
Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not
like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax
collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 13 But
the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but
beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14 I tell
you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For
everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be
exalted.” Luke 18:9-14 (NIV)
34 He
mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble. Proverbs 3:34 (NIV)
4 For
the Lord takes delight in his
people; he crowns the humble with salvation. Psalms 149:4 (NIV)
“This
is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at
my word.” Isaiah 66:2 (NIV)
8 He has
showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to
walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
(NIV)
1 As a
prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you
have received. 2 Be
completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:1-2 (NIV)
5 Young
men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe
yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore,
under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him
because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:5-7
(NIV)
12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever
humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:12 (NIV)

“In the
Kingdom, there are no great men of God, just humble men whom God has chosen to
use greatly. How do we know when we are
humble? When God speaks, we
tremble. God is looking for a man who
trembles at His word. Such a man will
find the Spirit of God resting upon him; he will become a dwelling place for
the Almighty. God asks for nothing but
ourselves.” Francis Frangipane
“Here is the divine antidote against the
pride and restless ambition of the men of this world. Nothing is more sad than to witness a
pushing, bustling, forward, self-confident spirit and style in those who
profess to be followers of Him who was meek and lowly in heart. It is such a flagrant contradiction of the
spirit and precepts of Christianity, and is a sure accompaniment of an unbroken
condition of the soul. It is utterly impossible
for anyone to indulge in a boastful, pretentious, self-confident spirit, if
ever he has really measured himself in the presence of God. To be much alone with God is the sovereign
remedy for pride and self-complacency.
May we know the reality of this in the secret of our own souls. May the good Lord keep us truly humble, in
all our ways, simply leaning on Himself and his grace…” C H
Macintosh
“Such as are haughty and self-conceited, rush
against the mighty hand of God, and destroy themselves; but those that are
humbled under it, will be protected by the same. Whatever knowledge or skill we may obtain in
the schools of human learning, the Scripture does not yet allow us to be truly
wise, but calls us blind and mere worldly students, till we learn to be poor in
spirit, lowly in heart, and dead to the world.
Therefore, the more a man dies to this world, the more is he
enlightened.” K. H. Von Bogatzky
“Humble
yourself, and cease to care what men think.”
A. W. Tozer
“And
if you don’t lie prostrate on the ground before that cross, you have never seen
it: if you are not humbled in the presence
of Jesus, you don’t know Him. You were
so lost that nothing could save you but the sacrifice of God’s only
begotten. Think of that, and as Jesus
lowered Himself for you, bow yourself in lowliness at His feet. A sense of Christ’s amazing love to us has a
greater tendency to humble us than even the conscious awareness of our own
guilt……Pride cannot live beneath the cross.”
Charles H. Spurgeon
