ONWARD
CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
BREAD
1 You
then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard
me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also
be qualified to teach others. 3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ
Jesus. 4 No one
serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs--he wants to please his
commanding officer. 2 Timothy 2:1-4
(NIV)
18 Timothy,
my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made
about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, 19 holding on to faith and a good
conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. 1 Timothy 1:18-19 (NIV)
11 But
you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the
eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the
presence of many witnesses.
1 Timothy
6:11-12 (NIV)
3 We put
no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be
discredited. 4 Rather,
as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in
troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work,
sleepless nights and hunger; 6 in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in
the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7 in truthful speech and in the power of God; with
weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; 8 through glory and dishonor,
bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; 9 known, yet regarded as
unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always
rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing
everything. 2 Corinthians 6:3-10 (NIV)
10 Finally,
be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God
so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not
against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore
put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be
able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt
of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in
place, 15 and
with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take
up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of
the evil one. 17 Take
the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all
occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert
and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)

“A Roman soldier's single-minded purpose,
rigorous discipline, and unquestioning obedience to his commanding
officer combine to make the figure
of a soldier an apt one for a servant of the gospel.” Bible
Knowledge Commentary
“Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as
to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before! Christ, the royal Master, leads against the
foe; Forward into battle, see his banner go!
At the sign triumph Satan’s host
doth flee; On, then, Christian soldiers, on to victory! Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of
praise; Brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise! Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brother, we are treading where the saints have trod; We are not divided; all
one body we, One in hope and doctrine, one in charity. Onward, then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song; Glory, laud, and honor, unto
Christ the King; This through countless ages men and angels sing. Onward,
Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.” Sabine Baring-Gould
“We
Christians too often substitute prayer for playing the game. Prayer is good;
but when used as a substitute for obedience, it is nothing but a blatant
hypocrisy, a despicable Pharisaism...To your knees, man! and to your Bible!
Decide at once! Don't hedge! Time flies! Cease your insults to God, quit
consulting flesh and blood. Stop your lame, lying, and cowardly excuses.
Enlist!” C. T. Studd
“Who
is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve
the King? Who will be His helpers, Other
lives to bring? Who will leave the
world’s side? Who will face the
foe? Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go? By Thy call of mercy, By Thy grace divine, We
are on the Lord’s side – Savior, we are Thine.
Not for weight of glory, Not for crown and palm, Enter we the army, Raise
the warrior psalm; But for love that claimeth Lives for whom He died; He whom
Jesus nameth Must be on His side. By Thy
love constraining, By Thy grace divine, We are on the Lord’s side – Savior we
are Thine. Fierce may be the conflict,
Strong may be the foe, But the King’s own army None can overthrow. Round His standard ranging, Victory to
secure, For His truth unchanging Makes the triumph sure. Joyfully enlisting By Thy grace divine, We
are on the Lord’s side – Savior, we are Thine.” Frances R. Havergal
“A
primary qualification for serving God with any amount of success, and for doing
God’s work well and triumphantly, is a sense of our own weakness. When God’s warrior marches forth to battle,
strong in his own might, when he boasts, ‘I know that I shall conquer, my own
right arm and my conquering sword shall get unto me the victory’, defeat is not
far distant. God will not go forth with
that man who marches in his own strength.
He who reckoneth on victory thus has reckoned wrongly, for ‘it is not by
might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts’. They who go forth to fight, boasting of their
prowess, shall return with their gay banners trailed in the dust, and their
armour stained with disgrace. Those who
serve God must serve Him in His own way, and in His strength, or He will never
accept their service. That which man
doth, unaided by divine strength, God can never own. The mere fruits of the earth He casteth away;
He will only reap that corn, the seed of which was sown from heaven, watered by
grace, and ripened by the sun of divine love.
God will empty out all that thou hast before He will put His own into
thee; He will first clean out the granaries before He will fill them with the
finest of the wheat……Your emptiness is but the preparation for your being
filled, and your casting down is but the making ready for your lifting up.” C. H. Spurgeon

- · Jesus never promised the battle would be easy. His promise is that He will never leave me nor forsake me. Victory is secure in Him.
