DO
NOT THINK LIGHTLY OF SIN
BREAD
6 Then
the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If
you do what is right, will you not be accepted?
But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it
desires to have you, but you must master it.”
Genesis 4:6-7 (NIV)
11 In
the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore
do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do
not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but
rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to
life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14 For
sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:11-14 (NIV)
15 What
then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don't
you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you
are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads
to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But
thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly
obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18 You
have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. Romans 6:15-18 (NIV)
20 When
you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What
benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those
things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have
become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is
eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:19-23 (NIV)
7 Do
not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The
one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap
destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap
eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the
proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore,
as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who
belong to the family of believers.
Galatians 6:7-10 (NIV)
21 God
made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21
(NIV)
1 Therefore,
since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off
everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run
with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let
us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the
joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the
right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful
men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In
your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding
your blood. Hebrews 12:1-4 (NIV)
8 If
we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If
we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness. 1
John 1:8-9 (NIV)
BUTTER
“Sin is a living, breathing organism with
will and intent seeking to destroy us.
It is referred to in the Bible as crouching at our door. It is a roaring lion infecting and
controlling natural man. It is alive and
well.”
Dr. Omar Hamada
“Jesus proved he
had paid the penalty for all our sins (if you are a believer in Christ) by
virtue of the fact that he came back from the dead. If one of my sins had
remained in Jesus, he would still be dead because the wages of sin is death.
But once Jesus paid for all my sins, death could no longer hold him and he came
back from the dead. That is why Peter said, ‘God raised him up, losing the
pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it ‘(Acts
2:24). Death has no power where there is no sin.” David Nicholas
“It is easier to denounce a thousand
sins in others than to slay one of our own.” John
Flavel
“No sin is small.”
Jeremy Taylor
“It may be a
secret sin on earth, but it is an open scandal in heaven.” Lewis Sperry Chafer
“Since ‘The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond
cure’, it is wise for us, like King David, to pray: ‘23 Search
me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if
there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.’ (Psalms
139:23-24 (NIV)). And, also like King
David as well, allow ourselves to have friends like Nathan who are willing to
tells us the difficult things so that we may change and no longer be on the
path of destruction. All sin leads to
death of something. Just saying…” BHY
“It is a precious
doctrine that the saints are safe, but it is a damnable inference from it, that
therefore they may live as they please. It is a glorious truth that God will
keep his people, but it is an abominable falsehood that sin will do them no
harm. Remember that God gives us liberty, not license, and while he gives us
protection, he will not allow us presumption.” C. H.
Spurgeon
“Living for Jesus, a life that is true. Striving to please Him in all that I do. Yielding allegiance, glad hearted and
free. This is the pathway of blessing
for me. Living for Jesus Who died in my
place, bearing on Calvary, my sin and disgrace.
Such love constrains me, to answer His call, follow His leading and give
Him my all.”
Thomas O. Chisholm
HEART
SAVOR
- Sin
must not reign in a believer’s body that we obey its evil desires.
- We
are to put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature – sexual immorality,
impurity, lust, evil desires and greed which is idolatry. (Colossians 3:5)
- Be
killing sin or it will be killing you.
