HYPOCRISY
- FALSE EVIDENCE APPEARING REAL
BREAD
1 “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’
before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your
Father in heaven. 2 So
when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the
truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you
give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is
doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who
sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:1-4 (NIV)
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to
be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the
door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is
done in secret, will reward you. 7 And
when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be
heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your
Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Matthew 6:5-8 (NIV)
27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful
on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything
unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as
righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” Matthew 23:27-28 (NIV)
14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay or shouldn’t we?” But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. 17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him. Mark 12:14-17 (NIV)

1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had
gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak
first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard
against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” 2 There is nothing
concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said
in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the
ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” Luke 12:1-3 (NIV)
25 “Woe
to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the
outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and
self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside
of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. Matthew 23:25-26 (NIV)
1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all
deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure
spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord
is good. 1 Peter 2:1-3 (NIV)
BUTTER
“Duplicity is abominable with God, and His soul hates
hypocrisy. To have one foot on the land
of truth, and another on the sea of falsehood will involve a terrible fall and
a total ruin.” Charles H. Spurgeon
“The popular image of Christ as ‘gentle
Jesus meek and mild’ simply will not do.
To be sure, He was full of love, compassion and tenderness. But He was also uninhibited in exposing error
and denouncing hypocrisy. Christ was a
controversialist.” John Stott
“Sin enough
and you will soon be unconscious of sin.” Oswald
Chambers
“No man
can put Jesus Christ to greater shame than by professing the gospel without
showing the power of it. There can be no
more vile and sordid hypocrisy than for any to pretend unto inward, habitual
sanctification, while their lives are barren in the fruits of righteousness and
obedience.” K. H. Von Bogatzky
“We
Christians too often substitute prayer for playing the game. Prayer is good;
but when used as a substitute for obedience, it is nothing but a blatant
hypocrisy, a despicable Pharisaism... To your knees, man! and to your Bible!
Decide at once! Don't hedge! Time flies! Cease your insults to God, quit
consulting flesh and blood. Stop your lame, lying, and cowardly excuses.
Enlist!” C. T. Studd
“Scripture
sees hell as self-chosen. . .. Hell appears as God’s gesture of respect for
human choice. All receive what they actually chose. Either to be with God
forever, worshipping Him, or without God forever, worshipping themselves.” J. I. Packer
“Duplicity
is abominable with God, and hypocrisy His soul hateth…. To hold with the hare
and run with the hounds, is a dastard’s policy.
In the common matters of daily life, a double-minded man is despised,
but in religion he is loathsome to the last degree…. How should divine justice
spare the sinner, who knows the right, approves it, and professes to follow it,
and all the while lives the evil, and gives it dominion in his heart?” Charles H. Spurgeon
