SALVATION
IN HIS NAME
BREAD
76 “And
you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on
before the Lord to prepare the way for him, 77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the
forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of
the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from
heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow
of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” Luke 1:76-79 (NIV)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who
was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the
Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he
would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 Moved
by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the
child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon
took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your
servant in peace. 30 For
my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which
you have prepared in the sight of all people, 32 a
light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” Luke 2:25-32 (NIV)
21 Jesus declared, “Believe me,
woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this
mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;
we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of
worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must
worship in spirit and in truth.” 25 The
woman said, “I know that Messiah (called Christ) is coming. When he comes, he
will explain everything to us.” 26 Then
Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.” John 4:21-26 (NIV)
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them:
“Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of
kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then
know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this
man stands before you healed. 11 He is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has
become the capstone’. 12 Salvation
is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men
by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:8-12
(NIV)
23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God. Romans 3:23 (NIV)
21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things
you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But
now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the
benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For
the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus
our Lord. Romans 6:21-23 (NIV)
And he has committed to us the
message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God
were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be
reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that
in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:19-21 (NIV)
BUTTER
“Man
needs, above all else, salvation.” Norman Goodacre
“The
freer the Gospel, the more sanctifying is the Gospel; and the more it is
received as a doctrine of grace, the more will it be felt as a doctrine
according to godliness. Salvation by grace - salvation by free grace -
salvation not of works, but according to the mercy of God - salvation on such a
footing is not more indispensable to the deliverance of our persons from the
hand of justice, than it is to the deliverance of our hearts from the chill and
the weight of ungodliness. Retain a single shred or fragment of legality with
the Gospel, and we raise a topic of distrust between man and God. We take away
from the power of the Gospel to melt and to conciliate. For this purpose, the
freer it is, the better it is.” Thomas Chalmers
“There
are such difficulties in the way of our salvation as could never be overcome
but by that grace of God which is almighty.
‘What is impossible with men is possible with God.’ His grace can work on the soul, so as to
alter the bent and bias of it, and give it a contrary leaning.” Matthew
Henry
“Is it not wonderful news to believe
that salvation lies outside ourselves?”
Martin Luther
“Luther
was right: the root behind all other manifestations of sin is compulsive
unbelief—our voluntary darkness concerning God, ourselves, his relationship to
the fallen world and his redemption purpose… If the fall occurred through
embracing lies, the recovery process of salvation must center on faith in
truth, reversing this condition.” Richard Lovelace
“The grace of God does not
find men fit for salvation, but makes them so.” Augustine
“God’s willingness
to show mercy appears by His joyfulness when sinners take hold on His
mercy. God’s goodness is that He
rejoices at the salvation of sinners and is glad when His mercy is accepted. God rejoices when a poor sinner comes in and
takes hold of His mercy. What an
encouragement to believe in God! He is a
God of pardons. Mercy pleases Him. Nothing prejudices us but unbelief. Unbelief stops the current of God’s mercy
from running, shuts God’s bowels, closes the cavity of Christ’s wounds, so no
healing virtue will come out. As far as
the heavens are above the earth, so far is God’s mercy above our sins. What will tempt us to believe, if not the
mercy of God?” Thomas Watson
“What are believers
saved from? From their former position
under the wrath of God, the dominion of sin, and the power of death; from their
natural condition of being mastered by the world, the flesh and the devil; from
the fears that a sinful life engenders, and from the many vicious habits that
were part of it. How are believers saved
from these things? Through Christ, and
in Christ. Our salvation involves first,
Christ dying for us and second, Christ living in us and we living in Christ,
united with Him in His death and risen life.
This vital union, which is sustained by the Spirit from the divine side
and by faith from our side, and which is formed in and through our new birth,
presupposes covenantal union in the sense of our eternal election in Christ.” J I Packer
“Our salvation, thank God, depends much more on
His love of us than on our love of Him.”
Father Andrew
“You cannot be your own Saviour,
either in whole or in part.” Hudson Taylor
Charles H. Spurgeon
“There
are many who stumble in the noon-day, not for want of light, but for want of
eyes.” John
Newton
“The salvation of
one soul is worth more than the framing of a Magna Carta of a thousand worlds.” John Keble
