THE
SELFLESS NATURE OF BIBLICAL LOVE
BREAD
4 Love
is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It is
not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record
of wrongs. 6 Love
does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always
trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)
8 Let no
debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he
who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “Do not
commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and whatever
other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: “Love your
neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love
does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:8-10 (NIV)
7 The
end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so
that you can pray. 8 Above
all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one
another without grumbling. 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to
serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:7-10 (NIV)
9 Love
must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in
brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:9-10 (NIV)
5 But if
anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we
know we are in him: 6 Whoever
claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:5-6 (NIV)
9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain
in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as
I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have
told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life
for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:9-14 (NIV)
14 For
Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and
therefore all died. 15 And he
died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for
him who died for them and was raised again. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (NIV)
18 Dear
children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 (NIV)
BUTTER
“A
Christian's unselfish love and concern for others should be exercised to the
point of sacrificially giving for others’ welfare.” Bible Knowledge Commentary
“Truth and love are
the characteristics which build up the church, especially in association with
each other. Yet this combination is rare in the contemporary church. Some
leaders are great champions of the truth and anxious to fight for it, but
display little love. Others are great advocates of love, but have no equal
commitment to truth...Truth
is hard if it is not softened by love and love is soft if it is not
strengthened by the truth.” John
Stott
“Love
for God and obedience to God are so completely involved in each other that any
one of them implies the other too.” F.
F. Bruce
“He
who is filled with love is filled with God Himself.” Augustine
“We
are shaped and fashioned by what we love.” Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe
“Love Him
totally who gave Himself totally for your love.” Claire
of Assisi
“The principle of
sacrifice is that we choose to do or to suffer what apart from our love we
should not choose to do or suffer.” William Temple
“He alone loves
the Creator perfectly who manifests a pure love for his neighbor.” Venerable
Bede
“In the greatest
display of obedience (and love) that will ever be known, Jesus took the full
chalice of Man’s sin and God’s wrath, looked shuddering, deep into its depth
and in a steel act of his will, drank it all.” Kent
Hughes
HEART SAVOR
· A believer is to use whatever gifts they have received
to administer God’s grace to others in its various forms. The body suffers when we – out of selfishness
or lack of love for the body - fail to do our gifting’s.
· Biblical love is sincere and motivated out of love for
the Lord and others.
· Christ’s love compels me to no longer live for myself
but for Him.
