RISES
TO SHOW COMPASSION
BREAD
18 Yet
the Lord longs to be gracious to
you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord
is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! Isaiah 30:18 (NIV)
For
the Lord your God is gracious and
compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him. 2 Chronicles 30:9 (NIV)
1 Praise
the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost
being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord,
O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-- 3 who forgives all your sins and
heals all your diseases, 4 who
redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires
with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalms 103:1-5 (NIV)
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow
to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his
anger forever; 10 he
does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are
above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the
west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on
his children, so the Lord has
compassion on those who fear him. Psalms
103:8-13 (NIV)
5 The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God
is full of compassion. Psalms 116:5
(NIV)
8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow
to anger and rich in love. 9 The Lord
is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. Psalms 145:8-9 (NIV)
35 Jesus
went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had
compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without
a shepherd. Matthew 9:35-36 (NIV)
14 When
Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their
sick. Matthew14:14 (NIV)
32 Jesus
called his disciples to him and said, “I have
compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have
nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on
the way.” Matthew 15:32 (NIV)
48 Many
rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of
David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call
him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He's
calling you.” 50 Throwing
his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51 “What
do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi,
I want to see.” 52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith
has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus
along the road. Mark 10:48-52 (NIV)
3 Praise
be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and
the God of all comfort, 4 who
comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble
with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of
Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort
overflows. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (NIV)
21 Yet
this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your
faithfulness. 24 I say
to myself, “The Lord is my
portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The Lord
is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for
the salvation of the Lord. Lamentations 3:21-26 (NIV)

“While I regarded
God as a tyrant I thought my sin a trifle; But when I knew Him to be my Father,
then I mourned that I could ever have kicked against Him. When I thought God was hard, I found it easy
to sin; but when I found God so kind, so good, so overflowing with compassion,
I smote upon my breast to think that I could ever have rebelled against One who
loved me so, and sought my good.” C.H. Spurgeon
“It is rare that
Christians earnestly seek the Lord’s face when things are going swimmingly,
when material blessings abound and we seem to be protected from the
vicissitudes faced by others. But in the
blackness of discouragement, when we are harassed and downcast, we may indeed
turn to the Lord and acknowledge our helplessness apart from his grace; we may
do so knowing that God is a compassionate God and that Jesus’ compassion was
particularly directed toward the harassed and the helpless.” D A
Carson
“The
Christian’s compassion must be like God’s – unceasing.” William Barclay
“I
love Him because He first loved me. His
goodness and mercy and compassion to me are new every day. And my assurance is lodged in these aspects
of His character. My trust is in His
love for me as His own. My serenity has
as its basis an implicit, unshakable reliance on His ability to do the right
thing, the best thing in any given situation.
This to me is the supreme portrait of my Shepherd. Continually there flows out to me His
goodness and His mercy, which even though I do not deserve them, come
unremittingly from their source of supply – His own great heart of love.” Phillip Keller
“Every act of
compassion done by anyone for his fellow Christian is done by Christ working in
him.” Julian of Norwich
