OUT
OF THE SLIMY PIT
BREAD
1 I
waited patiently for the Lord; he
turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and
mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God. Psalms
40:1-3 (NIV)
Praise
the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost
being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord,
O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-- 3 who forgives all your sins and
heals all your diseases, 4 who
redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires
with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalms 103:1-5 (NIV)
16 He
reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful
enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day
of my disaster, but the Lord was
my support. 19 He
brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. Psalms 18:16-19 (NIV)
13 But I
pray to you, O Lord, in the time
of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. 14 Rescue me from the mire, do
not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. 15 Do not let the floodwaters
engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. 16 Answer me, O Lord, out of the goodness of your love;
in your great mercy turn to me. Psalms
69:13-16 (NIV)
17 Surely
it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me
from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back. 18 For the grave cannot praise
you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope
for your faithfulness. Isaiah 38:17-18
(NIV)
21 But
now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the
Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in
Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:21-24 (NIV)
13 For he
has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of
the Son he loves, 14 in
whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14 (NIV)
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts
them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that
house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But
everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is
like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that
house, and it fell with a great crash.” 28 When
Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their
teachers of the law. Matthew
7:24-29 (NIV)
BUTTER
“What if breaking this addiction of talking about problems could
break new ground of talking about our Provider? That we
couldn’t stop sharing about how we’ve been saved, rescued, redeemed,
revived?” Ann Voskamp
“The gospel is
God’s good news. Though I was alienated
from God and under his condemnation, living a life full of doubt and
disobedience, God loved me and rescued me (Christ lived perfectly, died on a
cross canceling my debt with God and rose alive from death) to forgive my doubt
and disobedience; to be my righteousness and to be my power to believe God, say
yes to him in worship and no to my sin.” Dr.
Tom Wood
“The most difficult person to deal
with is the one who has the prideful self-satisfaction of a past experience,
but is not working that experience out in his everyday life. If you say you are sanctified, show it. The experience must be so genuine that it
shows in your life. Beware of any belief
that makes you self-indulgent or self-gratifying; that belief came from the pit
of hell itself, regardless of how beautiful it may sound.”
Oswald Chambers
“Rescue
the perishing, Care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, Lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus the mighty to
save. Though they are slighting
Him, Still He is waiting, Waiting the penitent child to receive; Plead with
them earnestly, Plead with them gently; He will forgive if they only
believe. Down in the human heart,
Crushed by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by
a loving heart, Wakened by kindness, Chords that are broken will vibrate once
more. Rescue
the perishing, Duty demands it; Strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way, Patiently win them; Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has
died.
Rescue the perishing, Care for the dying; Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.” Fanny Crosby
“I am come to find you wherever you may be. I will look for you till the eyes of My pity
see you. I will follow you till the
hands of My mercy reach you, and I will still hold you…to My heart.” Charles H. Spurgeon
HEART SAVOR
- We all need rescuing some just don’t know it. There is no one righteous not even one.
- Preaching the Gospel is simply one beggar telling another where to get Bread and Living Water. 1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.” Isaiah 55:1-2 (NIV)
- There is no pit that His hand can’t reach further still.
