SELF-DENIAL
BREAD
3 Do
nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider
others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own
interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
5 Your
attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance
as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a
cross! 9 Therefore
God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every
name, 10 that
at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under
the earth, 11 and
every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV)
6 God “will
give to each person according to what he has done.” 7 To those who by persistence in
doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are
self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and
anger. 9 There
will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the
Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good:
first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism. Romans 2:6-11 (NIV)
24 Then
Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come
after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me
will find it.” Matthew 16:24-25
(NIV)
23 Then
he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me
will save it.” Luke 9:23-24 (NIV)
19 The
acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and
debauchery; 20 idolatry
and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions 21 and
envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that
those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the
sinful nature with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:19-24 (NIV)
BUTTER
“They that deny
themselves for Christ shall enjoy themselves in Christ.” John
Mason
“From
God’s perspective, one hidden act of repentance, one little gesture of selfless
love, one moment of true forgiveness is all that is needed to bring God from
His throne to run to His returning son and to fill the heavens with sounds of
divine joy.” Henri J. M. Nouwen
“The person who serves selflessly, lovingly,
without complaint, and without seeking recognition is highly regarded in the
kingdom of God. The world will estimate your importance by the number of people
serving you. God is more concerned with the number of people you are serving.”
Henry Blackaby, Richard

HEART SAVOR
·
The
self-denial attitude of Jesus should be my attitude as well.
·
The more
selfish I am the more empty I am. The
more self-less I am the more filled I am with all the goodness of the Fruit of
the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control. It really
is a no-brainer – the more you give the more you get.
·
Better to
be highly regarded by God than by man or self.
